What is Art? It is an age-old question. Everyone has their own definition and interpretation of what art is. It’s a subjective topic and people perceive it differently whose meaning can be entirely different from others. Here are some of the responses by eminent figures of history. What is Art? It is an age-old question. Everyone has their own definition and interpretation of what art is. It’s a subjective topic and people perceive it differently whose meaning can be entirely different from others. Here are some of the responses by eminent figures of history.
“We work in the dark — we do what we can — we give what we have. Our doubt is our passion and our passion is our task. The rest is the madness of art.”
“Art is not, as the meta-physicians say, the manifestation of some mysterious idea of beauty or God; it is not, as the aesthetical physiologists say, a game in which man lets off his excess of stored-up energy; it is not the expression of man’s emotions by external signs; it is not the production of pleasing objects; and, above all, it is not pleasure; but it is a means of union among men, joining them together in the same feelings, and indispensable for the life and progress toward well-being of individuals and of humanity.”
“Art is the most intense mode of individualism that the world has known.”
However different the definitions you get, in its essence, “Art is the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power.”
Painting and drawing are the two most common types of arts whose definition are as varied and perceptions as different. Painting and drawing, referred to as leisure activity by some people, are extremely popular from kids to old people. Whether you pursue it as a profession or do it to just have fun, the benefits you reap can be extremely beneficial in various aspects of your life.
– Filling an empty white piece of canvass requires use of ones creativity. Drawing and painting something as simple an apple too requires creativity. These activities greatly benefit in the development of one’s mind. For right-brained people, it’s a great way to enhance the artistic aspect they already manifest and for left-brained people, it can stimulate their creativity and improve it.
– It’s a great emotional outlet. Drawings and painting generally try to convey some kind of emotions to the audience. Unbeknownst to artist or deliberately, they are representing the artist’s inner emotions. So if you are lately feeling stressed or emotional low, take an artistic retreat and let those emotions fill the empty canvas. And if you are a shy person or for whatever reasons you cannot communicate effectively, it empowers you to communicate with mass and you can speak as loud as possible.
– Drawing and painting improves memory and because of this health benefit, people who are suffering from Alzheimer’s disease benefit significantly. Although they may have problems with their memory, drawing and painting can improve their recalling skills and as a result, they may experience less complicated form of their illness.
– You become more observant of the details. While drawing and painting, you will be exposed to light, darkness, color, shading, and many other properties. With practice, you will be a natural at noticing the most minuscule details there is. Your eyes will be trained to look for intricate designs and forms that may have been ignored in the past.
– In addition to these benefits, drawing and painting will also improve your problem solving skills, increase emotional intelligence, improve sensory and motor skills and also improve your concentration.
Art is something that everyone can do it and everyone can enjoy. “I can’t draw or paint.” People often give these excuses. It’s not that they cannot draw, it’s just that their final outcome does not match their expectation. Think of it as practising piano for days or even months before you recital. You practice piano for days not letting the mistakes you make get you and improving it along the way until when you can finally play impeccably in your final recital.
Practice. Don’t think much about the final outcome. Just enjoy the process of learning and one day, you will reach where you want to be and have a final tangible masterpiece that is entirely your own.

Here are some of the art instructors who are currently offering Painting, Drawing and sketching classes in Brampton & Mississauga
Born in Alicante, Spain, Leticia was interested in arts from the very beginning. Despite her proclivity towards art from early on, when she saw the famous Picasso painting “El Guernica” at her grandparents home, it was this moment of epiphany when she realized that she wanted to become an artist. Thus her journey began. With hardwork and many sleepless nights, she experimented a lot with colors to find her own style. She was a self-taught artist at this point.
Pursuing her passion for arts, she went to the art school EASD in Valencia, Spain in 2005 to study sculpture where she learned to use different materials such as: wood, stone, metal, and clay. After she graduated, she decided to exclusively focus on painting because she felt more comfortable with it.
Leticia’s artworks are as inspiring as a person she is and with utter dedication and hardwork she has won a few awards and has been featured in many exhibitions. Currently settled in Mississauga, Canada, Leticia custom paints for her clients and also teaches art to kids. She enjoys teaching kids and hopes that they enjoy her lessons as much as she does teaching them.
